'HAKKINEN WANTS TO RETURN TO F1 WITH WILLIAMS'
Thursday May 27 2004
In what is surely the most remarkable rumour of the season so far, two-times World Champion Mika Hakkinen is reportedly intent on making a return to F1 with Williams.
Yup, you did just read that last sentence correctly.
According to The Sun (not the most reliable of British publications, we hasten to admit), Hakkinen, who quit the sport in 2001, has now had a change of heart and wants to make a comeback. The report even claims that Hakkinen has 'been talking to German car giants BMW about a test in July or August.'
Another former World Champion currently out of F1, Jacques Villeneuve, has held talks with Williams - confirmed by Patrick Head last week - and is set to test for the team this summer.
The difference between Villeneuve and Hakkinen, however, is that the Canadian has maintained his fitness since leaving the sport eight months ago while Hakkinen's weight ballooned after he walked out on McLaren.
Rather dubiously, The Sun now states that Hakkinen is 'now super fit'. The paper quotes 'a source close to the driver' claiming: "Mika has been happy spending time with his wife and son Hugo. "But Hugo starts school in September and Mika is now thinking about how to fill his days."
Perhaps. But P-F1 rather suspects that a certain newspaper has just been thinking too hard about how to fill its pages this Thursday morning.
