UNLIKE Glasgow, a city full of rough-edged, cheap’n’cheerful theatre spaces, Edinburgh has been notably short, in recent years, of the kind of informal space where young companies on the verge of professional theatre can go through their paces.

But now, with remarkably little fuss, the city has acquired exactly the kind of off-the-wall year-round venue it needs, in the shape of the Roxy Art House at the old Lady Glenorchy Church in Roxburgh Place, a theatre/gallery/cafe inspired by the life and work of Ricky Demarco, and boasting - in what used to be the church tower - an edgy, exciting small-scale theatre space and an anything-can-happen atmosphere.

What’s happening in it this week is a bit of an oddity of a show, in the shape of an Edinburgh student production - by a group called Theatre Paradok - of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s The Love of the Nightingale, a searching post-1970s take on the ancient myth of Philomele, who is raped and silenced by her sister’s husband Tereus after he falls madly in love with her.

It’s not that Wertenbaker reduces the story to a series of ideological simplicities; her view of masculinity, its vulnerabilities, and its construction through rituals of conflict and domination, is particularly complex and intriguing.

But she does give full weight to the women, their perspective, their humanity, their words, their suffering, their incredulity at how the balance of worldly power is weighed against them; and she explores the role of theatre and ritual in calling down the gods and revealing truth, in ways that recall her best- known play, Our Country’s Good.

Despite some inevitable inexperience among the actors in director Anya Leonard’s 20-strong company, this delightfully ambitious production does full justice to every aspect of this complex play, and introduces, in its star Katie Hartman, a messy, interesting, complicated young actress with the kind of unexpected raw charisma that light up theatres.

Het is een drukke week. Gisteren opende de tentoonstelling, die helaas voor onze groep een beetje in de soep is gelopen door het kapotgaan van onze supersonische 3d projector. Nu kunnen we ons filmmateriaal slechts met een gewone beamer laten zien, en dat is natuurlijk een beetje een lullige vertoning. Erger is dat we de komende 2 dagen desondanks toch open moeten blijven, en onze installatie van 11 to 18 elke dag moeten bewaken. :-(

Gelukkig heb ik morgenmiddag geen 'dienst' en kan ik met de rest van de klas gaan voetballen in de Meadows (groot stadspark a la Central Park hier in de stad). Ze kunnen uiteraard, net als veel Britse clubs, niet zonder een Nederlandse spits.. ;-)Zaterdag was het al heerlijk weer hier, hopelijk morgen ook. En dat terwijl we zondag nog zijn wezen schaatsen.

Afgelopen vrijdag hadden we al een behoorlijk vrolijke wodka-rijke housewarming party van Daisy, een van mijn klasgenootjes, donderdag gaan we aan de ouzo bij Griekse Stella, en vrijdag natuurlijk het slotfestijn na afloop van de laatste toneelvoortelling.

En jawel, vanavond vond de premiere plaats, die gelukkig uiteindelijk toch vrij goed is verlopen. Toch wel 40 man publiek op de eerste avond, geen tekst vergeten, en leuke reacties. Jawel, we mogen er toch wel trots op zijn. Vrijdag komt iemand het voor me filmen, en hopelijk weet ik ook nog wat foto's te versieren.

En dan, als het na het weekend allemaal voorbij en over en afgelopen is, pak ik mijn koffer en kom lekker naar huis! Nou ja, voor een lange week dan, want we moeten nog een businessplan schrijven en voor deze zomer een afstudeer project verzinnen, maar eerst even een weekje Terug naar Oegst.. eh Tilburg/Nijmegen!

With interactive chairs, soundscapes, a very promissing animated movie, a video documentary and of course our brilliant interactive Appleton Tower Dome (don't ask..).

Theatre Paradok, in Collaboration with the Roxy Art House, will perform The Love of the Nightingale; Timberlake Wertenbaker's modern take on the classic Greek myth of Philomele, a girl whose excitable innocence and lack of worldly knowledge lead to her violent rape at the hands of her sister's husband. In a world where a simple phrase can decide a destiny, fate and its minions perceptibly conspire to bring about a universally accepted tragedy vainly fought against by the silenced Philomele.

That is it in a nutshell. Fate, flippant fighting, dark comedy, tragedy, blood and puppets- it is all there. Plus, the performance will include live musicians performing darkly atmospheric original music by Atushi Muramatsu.

Theatre Paradok is a new theatre company that aims to accentuate the imaginative and experimental elements of student theatre in Edinburgh, with a truly international set of members and actors providing a correspondingly diverse melting pot of ideas. Paradok will be putting on at least one high quality performance such as this a year. Ok, onze belgische buren (of moet ik zeggen, jullie belgische buren) hebben een leuk schrijfproject opgezet. Het genootschap De Lege Ton van Diogenes uit Antwerpen organiseert een schrijfproject in de vorm van een vervolg verhaal, waaraan alle websitebezoekers mogen deelnemen. Het verhaal is al een paar alinea's onderweg en gaat op dit moment nog helemaal nergens heen, maar het is wel een interessante onderneming.

Iedereen mag max 10 zinnen toevoegen aan het verhaal, het moet wel enigszins kwaliteit zijn. Als het eindresultaat een beetje substantieel is, wordt het uitgebracht in boek vorm.

Dus creatieve medemensen die altijd al een bijdrage aan een boek wilden leveren, waar wachten we nog op? Op naar www.legeton.be en schrijven dat verhaal!
